Theresa May says G7 summit was ‘difficult’ occasion

Howard TerryJun 13, 2018

While making no direct criticism of Mr Trump, Mrs May told MPs: "This was a hard summit with, at times, some very candid discussions, but the conclusion I draw is that it is only through continued dialogue that we can find ways to work together to resolve the challenges we face".

Trump accused the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, of being "dishonest and weak" for pointing out that America's excuse for imposing aluminum and steel tariffs on his country - that they pose a national security threat to the United States - makes no sense.

As the G7 summit ended in disarray last week, so did the long-standing alliance between the American and Canadian administration, following a debate over tariffs, counter-tariffs and some name-calling.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons will also now have the powers to attribute responsibility for chemical weapons attacks. "We fully intend to honour it".

Well, if the Western group of nations cannot get used to the mercurial character of President Trump, what can be expected from other world leaders.

"I want to pay a particular tribute to Prime Minister Trudeau for his leadership and skilful chairing, which enabled us after two days of negotiation between leaders to agree actions and a shared approach on some of the most pressing challenges facing the global community and our citizens", she said.

"We expressed deep disappointment at the unjustified decision of the United States to apply tariffs to steel and aluminium imports".

"Everything I've heard on the trade front is that the Canadians, the Mexicans, our European allies. all have been extremely disappointed by the way President Trump has brought up the trade issues".

In her comments on Monday, May warned of the risks of a tit-for-tat escalation of the trade dispute. "That is why it was right that we had such an open and direct discussion at this summit".
