The F-15 fighter went down in the sea about 80 kilometers south of Naha City early Monday morning.

Japanese media reported on a second pilot that ejected from the aircraft, whose condition is also not known. The pilot is not in a life-threatening condition.

A US Air Force's F-15 aircraft takes off at Kadena US Air Force Base on Japan's southwestern island of Okinawa on June 16, 2009.

In a statement Monday, Kadena Airbase said the aircraft crashed early Monday morning and the pilot was sent to a US naval hospital.

A series of emergency landings and parts falling from USA military aircraft have highlighted safety concerns. The southernmost island prefecture hosts the bulk of United States military facilities in Japan. "Accidents involving U.S. military aircraft are occurring repeatedly". "I will ask for detailed reports about why it happened".

The pilot had successfully ejected himself from the plane and was rescued safely by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Search and Rescue teams, where he was then transferred to the U.S. Naval Hospital on Camp Foster.

The fighter jet crashed during flight training with six other aircraft. Citing local people's concerns, he said the prefecture will lodge a protest on the matter. F-15 crashed near the coast of Okinawa on Monday morning.

"The Japanese government doesn't have the capacity to address the problems as its own", the governor said.

The American military presence on Okinawa has irritated Japanese civilians on the island and created tension in the otherwise warm relations between the USA and Japanese militaries.
