The saga of AIDS in Reagan-era America is seen winning Tonys for stars Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane, who plays closeted conservative lawyer Cohn, and taking the Tony for best play revival.

Then came Robert De Niro, who arrived to present the most anticipated moment of the night - a performance by Bruce Springsteen - and began by launching an expletive at the president, pumping his arms for emphasis. In the coming months, Sasson Gabai, the veteran Israeli actor who portrayed the lead role of Tawfiq in the film, will be taking on the role on Broadway as well.

Actress Glenda Jackson is also among the British nominees.

The David Yazbeck-composed musical swept the awards ceremony with 10 prizes - including best musical, best actress (Katrina Lenk) and best actor (Tony Shalhoub).

Two of the shows going into the night with most nominations - Tina Fey's "Mean Girls" and "SpongeBob SquarePants", with 12 nods each - found the night tough. Also shut out was "Frozen, " the stage adaptation of the blockbuster Disney film.

Best Book of a Musical: "The Band's Visit". The musical is about the interactions among Arabs and Jews when a snafu causes musicians in an Egyptian police band to become stranded overnight in a village in the Israeli desert.

Ari'el Stachel, accepting his award for best featured actor in a musical for The Band's Visit, hit numerous same notes, directing his speech to his parents, who blotted their tears in the audience.

Kai Harada, who won for his sound design on "The Band's Visit", initially enrolled in Yale College, but left before graduation to pursue a career in theatrical sound design.

Andrew Garfield picked up the first award of the night for Best Actor in a Play for his role in Angels in America. Bruce Springsteen will make a rare TV appearance, performing live on the show, and will receive a Special Tony Award for his one-man show "Springsteen on Broadway".

Members of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School drama club, whose teacher Melody Herzfeld was honored with the Excellence in Theatre Education Tony, performed the Rent anthem to pay tribute to the victims of the February shooting at their school.

"I never dreamed that one day I, a Brit of all things, would be honoured with the same lifetime award that my idol won, by my peers and the true home of the musical, Broadway".

"Angels in America", a sprawling two-part drama about the AIDS crisis, was named the year's Best Play Revival.
