Latest Forecast for Hurricane Bud

Ismael LynchJun 14, 2018

Bud's strongest winds reach out 35 miles from its core, while its winds of at least 39 mph - tropical storm strength - extend 125 miles, which means they could touch the coast as it moves past.

"Bud is moving within an environment of low wind shear, moist air, and warm ocean water", said AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski. By then, however, Bud is predicted to be substantially weaker, most likely downgraded to a tropical storm. In addition, rain from Bud "could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides in higher terrain".

As of the Tuesday morning advisory, winds were up to 130 miles per hour making Bud a major category 4 hurricane.

At least some peripheral impacts are possible near the coast from future Bud, even if the center remains offshore.

Through Thursday, the storm is expected to dump rainfall of 3 to 6 inches (8-15 cm) across much of southwestern Mexico, with up to 10 inches in some areas. A tropical storm watch has been posted for portions of Mexico's west coast. The storm peaked on Friday as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 miles per hour (220 kph).

The National Hurricane Center noted winds, heavy rain and unsafe ocean swells are likely. That same climate pattern could also put a damper on the Atlantic hurricane season.

The National Weather Service's seven-day rainfall forecast.

The National Hurricane Center Monday evening (June 11) continued to monitor a disturbance in the western Caribbean expected to move into the Gulf of Mexico by the end of the week.

The eastern Pacific hurricane season is forecast to be quite active, thanks in part to a developing El Niño.
