Man behind Fyre Festival disaster busted for scamming attendees - again

Irene MckinneyJun 14, 2018

Investors in the festival scheduled for spring 2017 lost more than $26 million in what was advertised as "the cultural experience of the decade". McFarland plead guilty to those charges in March. In addition, if he is freed on bail for the Fyre Festival case, McFarland will face a $1 million bail on the new charges. McFarland's lawyers were not immediately available to comment on the new charges.

A magistrate judge ordered him detained Tuesday after prosecutors said they have evidence that McFarland may have also committed bank fraud and identity theft while out on bail.

William McFarland, who is still awaiting sentencing for the failed festival, has now been charged by the Southern District of NY with selling tickets that did not exist to marquee sports and music events.

The organizer of the infamous Fyre Festival, a failed concert in the Bahamas in 2017 that went viral for its lack of success, has been charged with duping customers again.

"We vigorously contest what is in this complaint", he told U.S. Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein in Manhattan. The schemer reportedly sold bogus tickets to A-list events like the 2018 Met Gala, 2018 Grammy Awards, Super Bowl LII and even a private dinner with National Basketball Association superstar LeBron James.

Greenberg said McFarland was living lavishly with monthlong stays in luxury hotels and excursions to expensive restaurants. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. "He targeted the same victims who tried to attend his Fyre Festival".

McFarland was trying to sell the tickets in March, the same month he pleaded guilty to defrauding investors for the Fyre Festival, prosecutors allege.

For the ticket scam, McFarland now faces a new count of wire fraud and one count of money laundering.

"Mr. McFarland is looking at a significant term of imprisonment".
