Microsoft Will Reportedly Launch Next-Gen Xbox in 2020

Xbox will be on the show floor at E3 alongside numerous other biggest names in the industry when the doors of the convention open on Tuesday. It also appears that the Scarlett name doesn't just apply to a single next-gen Xbox console but rather a "series of devices" that seem to all be related to gaming in some way.

Phil Spencer, Microsoft Executive President of Gaming, has yet to officially announce any word on the "Scarlett" project, though did state they are now "deep into architecturing the next Xbox consoles".

We don't know when Sony is planning to release PlayStation 4's successor, but the company's current system continues to far outsell the Xbox One. The company refreshed the line up with the Xbox One X, a more powerful version of the device past year. It will be interesting to see how the E3 showcases factor into future sales. But Microsoft's strength in cloud computing should put it in a good position.

Microsoft announced plenty of Xbox One games during its recent E3 press conference, includingHalo Infinite and Gears 5, but head of Xbox Phil Spencer also revealed that system architects are now working on the next-generation of Xbox systems. The reports claim that Microsoft is working on a "family of devices". "The company's new gaming cloud division started at the end of past year, which is essentially Microsoft's version of 'Netflix for video games".

The video game industry is seeing its biggest investment ever, with the three big consoles "very healthy", according to Electronic Software Association chief executive Michael Gallagher.

Video game industry revenue worldwide tallied about $116 billion a year ago, according to the ESA. That being said, specific details about these products are not yet available.

Another sign of console-quality play making its way to mobile devices came in the form of telecom giant AT&T showing off ultra high-speed 5G wireless data capabilities on the E3 show floor.
