Trump Declares North Korea ‘No Longer a Nuclear Threat’

President Donald Trump has arrived back in Washington from his historic nuclear summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

"Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office".

Trump also said in a separate tweet that North Korea is "no longer" the US' "biggest and most unsafe problem", telling Americans and the rest of the world they can "sleep well tonight!"

But like everyone else, military chiefs in South Korea were caught off-guard by Trump's unilateral declaration of an end to joint exercises, which is likely to embolden conservatives calling for Seoul to develop nuclear weapons of its own.

Trump, who returned to Washington early on Wednesday, hailed the meeting with Kim, the first between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader, as a success that had removed the North Korean nuclear threat.

However, there was no mention of the previous United States aim of "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization" from Pyongyang.

She also went on air to report on the deaths of Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Un's father and grandfather. Mr. Trump also claimed Kim told him North Korea has destroyed a "major" missile testing site, although he didn't expand on that.

The welcome from Japan was conspicuously less effusive than from other countries, with Tokyo under direct threat from North Korean missiles and reliant on the USA for its defence.

However, in the joint statement signed by the US and North Korea, it only says that the country is committed to "working toward complete denuclearization". On Wednesday morning, he took to Twitter to claim there was "no longer" a nuclear threat posed by the North Korean regime.

Beijing immediately hinted that the United Nations could consider lifting the punishing sanctions on North Korea that Trump credits with bringing Kim to the table. Ultimately, in the short term, at least while diplomacy continues, Trump's tweets seem to indicate he is ready to live with the fact that North Korea has nuclear weapons and potentially the capacity to fire them at the United States, in an implicit erosion of the U.S. strategic position.
