Brooks Koepka wins second straight US Open

Brooks Koepka has become a multiple major victor with a gutsy victory at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills in NY.

Koepka staved off a brilliant charge by Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, who matched the lowest score in tournament history, a seven-under-par 63 at Shinnecock Hills.

Koepka, who claimed his first major at Erin Hills previous year, became the first player to defend the US Open title since Curtis Strange won in 1988 and 1989.

It was the lowest round posted at a US Open at Shinnecock by two strokes, and sits nicely alongside the course record 63 he shot previous year at Carnoustie - the site of The Open next month.

Dustin Johnson surrendered a four-shot lead to fall into a four-way tie atop the US Open leaderboard as Shinnecock Hills again battered the world's best golfers on Saturday.

Johnson carded a 7-over-par 77 but still found himself sharing the lead after surviving brutal conditions as Koepka set himself up for a shot at successfully defending his title.

Finau and Berger both finished their rounds right about when 36-hole leader Dustin Johnson was starting his day at windy, sun-baked Shinnecock Hills.

Berger and Finau, along with Thailand's Kiradech Aphribarnrat, who shares seventh place at six-over par and thanks to his score of 68, were the only three players break 70. Fitting, really, that it was a par at a U.S. Open in which pars were so tough to get.

When it was all said and done, Mickelson was assessed a two-stroke penalty for hitting the ball while still in play, forcing him to walk away with a 10.

The two-time major champion had some harsh words for the USGA after finishing his round Saturday, saying that the organization has "lost the golf course" in an interview with British television network Sky Sports.

As it was, he became only the sixth man to shoot 63 in a US Open, joining the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Miller on that mark.

His chance for history was just short as he missed a birdie putt on 18, which would have been the first 62 in the tournament's history. She caddied for Koepka at the Par 3 contest at the Master's in 2016.

"I said that's one of the strangest things I've ever seen and then just started laughing, to be honest". Tony Finau and Daniel Berger started the weekend 11 shots out of the lead. But he shot 81 in the final round and Michael Campbell was the surprise victor. The course played almost a shot easier on average than it did on any other day this week. Reed birdied his first three holes, five of his first eight, and went out in 4-under 31.
