Dobson who played Angie Watts - the wife of "Dirty" Den - in the TV soap, described Grantham as the "archetypal charming rogue" and spoke of their "magic" chemistry on the show.

This week, the soap star was being monitored by doctors after returning to the United Kingdom from Bulgaria.

Former 'EastEnders' stars including Tracy Ann Oberman have shared tributes to Leslie Grantham, after the actor's death on Friday morning.

Dobson, who played Grantham's on-screen wife Angie Watts in the soap, told BBC News: "He was a good-looking guy, he was a charmer, he was amusing, he was a good actor".

With his infamous catchphrase "Hello princess", Den's storylines landed EastEnders some of their biggest viewing figures, most notably when more than 30 million people tuned in to see him hand over divorce papers to lying wife Angie on Christmas Day 1986.

He wrote: "What a life Leslie Grantham led".

Letitia Dean, who plays Den's adopted daughter Sharon Watts in the soap, released a statement via the official EastEnders Press Twitter page.

Grantham first left Albert Square in 1989 after a criminal gang he was involved with, called The Firm, tried to kill him.

"They will not be making any statements to the media".

Kathy Beale actress Gillian Taylforth said: "I'm deeply saddened to hear the very sad news". They also ask that no photographs be taken of them in their grief. "There will also be a private funeral which will be attended by close family and friends".

Leslie moved out of the United Kingdom in 2015 after splitting from his wife Jane Laurie after 31 years of marriage, setting up home in Bulgaria.

In 1966, he was convicted of murdering a German taxi driver and in 2004 he was found to have performed webcam sex online from his "EastEnders" dressing room at Elstree Studios.

She added: "He was a wonderful and special actor, witty and very talented".
