FDA: 73 people get salmonella from cereal; investigation underway

Kellogg Co. announced Friday, June 15, 2018, that it is voluntarily recalling 15.3-ounce and 23-ounce packages of Honey Smacks in response to a multi-state salmonella outbreak linked to the cereal.

Kellogg says people should throw out the boxes and contact the company for a refund. So far, 60 people in five Midwestern states have been ill, and 31 of whom were known to have been hospitalized. All have a "best if used by" date between June 14, 2018, and June 14, 2019.

Epidemiologic evidence indicates that Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal is a likely source of this multistate outbreak.

It started in early March.

Outbreaks of salmonella have been preliminarily tied to Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal and pre-cut melons and a fruit medley.

The CDC recommends throwing away all recalled Honey Smacks cereal, even if some of the cereal has been eaten and no one has gotten sick.

About 1.2 million people in the United States contract salmonella each year, according to the CDC. NY has reported the highest number of cases - seven - while California, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania have each reported five cases. All affected products were distributed in the U.S., Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, the Caribbean, Guam, Tahiti, and Saipan.

Salmonella symptoms include fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain that begins 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria. However, if the organisms get into the bloodstream it can cause severe illness.

The Food and Drug Administration and the CDC contacted Kellogg after receiving reports of salmonella-related illnesses in several states, the CDC said Thursday.

Recovery takes anywhere from four to seven days.
