Figures show about 2,000 minors separated from families

Central American migrants traveling in the "Migrant Via Crucis" caravan are pictured as they head to El Chaparral border crossing in Tijuana, Baja California state, Mexico, on 29 April 2018. They said they're running out of room at their own facilities amid President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration.

Almost 2,000 children have been separated from their families at the USA border over a six-week period during a crackdown on illegal entries, according to Department of Homeland Security figures.

The figures show that 1,995 minors were separated from 1,940 adults between April 19 and May 31, breaking down to an average of 46 children per day being separated from their families.

The new controversial procedure, implemented by the Trump administration, is part of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' self-described "zero tolerance" policy aimed at further limiting illegal entries into the U.S.

Sharing information with DHS, which oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, will likely mean parents and family members in the US illegally will not come forward for their children, fearing they'll be arrested - leading to longer stays for the children in the ORR shelters.

Earlier this week, Sessions, a United Methodist himself, defended the policy to faith leaders in a speech in Fort Wayne, Indiana by pointing to several passages from the Bible to justify their actions.

Since then, stories of weeping children torn from the arms of their frightened parents have flooded the media and the policy has been widely criticized by church groups, politicians and children's advocates who say it is inhumane. A fresh battle in Congress is brewing, in part over this issue.

Some immigrant advocates have said women were being separated from their infants - a charge Homeland Security and Justice officials flatly denied.

The children are passed into the care of the US Department of Health and Human Services, the British Broadcasting Corporation reports.

The "Chrisley Knows Best" star was at LAX on Saturday, and we asked him about Romans 13. the Bible verse Sessions quoted the other day while defending the Trump administration's immigration policies.

"I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command.to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes", he said.

A two-year-old Honduran asylum seeker cries as her mother is searched and detained near the U.S. -Mexico border on June 12, 2018 in McAllen, Texas.

The United States government has separated almost 2,000 minors from their families at the border between April 19 and May 31 as part of a crackdown by the Trump administrations on illegal immigration, according to a new report.

There were more than 50 at the official crossings in April and March each, according to the figures.
