Trump signs executive order to keep families together

One official said it was the Justice Department that generated the legal strategy that is codified in the working executive order, and disputed the notion that Homeland Security was involved in drawing up the document.

"No one wants to separate families and the president's action will ensure that those who are crossing our border illegally are detained and our laws are enforced", he said.

Asked about the possibility of an executive order on immigration, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters: "We'll keep you posted".

British Prime Minister Theresa May declared the United States was wrong to separate migrant children from their parents, but rejected calls to cancel Mr Trump's visit to the UK next month. "Go for it! WIN!"

Since May more than 2,300 children have been separated from their parents as part of the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy on illegal crossings at the US-Mexico border, according to US Customs and Border Protection.

"We can enforce our immigration laws without breaking families apart", said House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin. "Congress has failed to pass effective legislation that serves the national interest-that closes unsafe loopholes and fully funds a wall along our southern border", Sessions said at the time.

Although it was unclear if this is what Mr Trump is signing, he said he would be "signing something" and said he wants to keep families together.

In recent weeks, stories of weeping children torn from the arms of their parents have flooded the media along with video footage showing migrant children held in wire cages, sitting on concrete floors.

The president's U-turn on the separation of children from their parents comes amid growing fury across the US's political spectrum over the detention of children, some as young as seven months old.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday morning that he will sign an executive order that will keep families together - reversing his previous claim that only Congress could solve the problem his own administration created.

He told House Republicans on Tuesday night that he would support either of the immigration bills under consideration, but did not give a preference. The Republicans want security and insist on security for our country and we will have that. They want open borders, which breeds terrible crime.

A zero-tolerance policy on illegal immigration was announced in early May.

Trump's potential u-turn came just a day after he appeared unrepentant about the policy at a meeting of small business leaders. Homeland Security officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
