Administration seeks to expand immigrant family detention

President Donald Trump tried to cast doubt Friday on wrenching tales of migrant children separated from their families at the border, dismissing "phony stories of sadness and grief" while asserting the real victims of the nation's immigration crisis are Americans killed by those who cross the border unlawfully.

The subcommittee report found that from October 2013 through 2015 the federal agency placed almost 90,000 children with a sponsor, after they were detained at the border without a legal guardian.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions was in Fort Wayne last week to talk about the immigration policy. "Women, voters under 40 and black voters are also the most likely to think the Trump administration is too aggressive when it comes to trying to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into this country".

"Once you end up talking with one parent they tell you that there are 70 other parents in their dorm that are also separated and can I help them", she said, adding that immigration authorities had asked her to share the information so they could assist.

More than 2,300 children were taken from their families at the border in recent weeks. "I want Border Patrol, I want ICE". About 9,000 such family units have been caught in each of the last three months, according to US border authorities. Many immigrant children traveling alone have also been stopped - about 15,000 during the same period.

Kevin Lamarque / Reuters President Donald Trump introduces the parents of children killed by undocumented immigrants, in Washington, June 22. "You don't know what is going on", Trump said, speaking in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building highlighting "angel families". "At no point should a child be incarcerated, and children need to be with their parents".

They are trying to persuade a conservative bloc to approve bill that includes $25bn for Trump's border wall - a campaign promise which he has insisted Mexico will pay for - and a path to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children, known as Dreamers.

The Trump administration's separation of immigrant families on the border has stoked an outcry from immigrant and children's advocates and many lawmakers.

Protesters were already giving speeches as part of a planned rally outside the facility when a bus attempted to leave the processing center, transferring undocumented immigrants to an unknown location.

In Dilley, Texas, a facility was built on a remote site that was once an oil workers' encampment. The president said he would instead keep children and parents together.

"She did not tell me anything about how they are eating, or how they are sleeping, and nothing about the school".

US immigration laws, Trump declared, are "the weakest in the history of the world".

Meanwhile, the Justice Department has gone to court in an attempt to overturn a decades-old settlement that limits the amount of time migrant children can be locked up with their families to 20 days.

Brane said there is a viable alternative: supervised release to communities around the country.

Trump's latest Twitter crusade came after telling members, "I'm with you 100%" during a closed-door meeting Tuesday with House Republicans on immigration, according to a statement from White House principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah.

Just 2 percent of participants - 23 out of 954 - were reported as absconders.

"There has been no change to the department's zero tolerance policy to prosecute adults who cross our border illegally instead of claiming asylum at any port of entry at the border, " spokeswoman Sara Isgur Flores said.

In addition to providing private showers and educational field trips for children, the centers should appear "child-friendly rather than penal in nature", the agency said.
