Woman allegedly calls police on 8-year-old black girl selling water

Nichole VegaJun 26, 2018

Internet meme, SNL parody. "To our awesome patients who use the Treatwell products, please know we are working to ensure we can bring on some new wonderful and ethical brands".

It's a decision the woman says she now regrets because the video of the incident has gone viral under the hashtag #PermitPatty. Jordan was selling water bottles outside the family's apartment building - directly across from AT&T Stadium - in hopes of catching thirsty San Francisco Giants fans.

"It's not your property", says the woman on her cell phone before the video cuts off.

According to USA Today, the girl was selling $2 water on a hot day to try to raise some money to go to Disneyland.

The cousin wrote on Twitter that the mother of the girl might file a harassment complaint against the woman.

"She's calling police on an 8-year-old little girl. you can hide all you want", the girl's mother said in the video. The backlash online has been swift and fierce, with commenters dubbing her as "Permit Patty" and worse, accusing Ettel of racism.

Ettel has said she did not actually call the police.

Here's what can be heard and seen in the video, and what both have said since.

Ettel says the girl is illegally selling water, which Austin disputes. "She's calling police on an 8-year-old little girl".

"Not on your property", Ettel retorted.

Unsurprisingly, there were people who claimed the incident wasn't about racial profiling, but really just an issue of legality.

"A better person would be calling her friends to have them come by and buy water", one tweet said. "The whole world gonna see you, boo".

While the HuffPost said it did reach out to the mother, she said otherwise on Instagram, where her handle is laddesowavy.

"It was completely stress-related, and I should have never confronted her. That was a mistake, a complete mistake", she continued.

"She did it to herself", she said.

Eight-year-old Jordan Austin was selling water without an official license.

She also thanked the family's supporters. Then Saturday Night Live's Cecily Strong found out about it.

As news of the incident spread, many social media users questioned whether Rodgers' race was a motivating factor for the confrontation.

Austin called her explanation all wet.

But after seeing Permit Patty at her worst, the director of the film chose to cut her out of the project and remove "all content that remotely promotes her or her business".

"My cousin heard her on the phone", Lee told Teen Vogue. "We would love to donate to an organization that provides opportunities to young women of color interested in becoming entrepreneurs".

She tried to get the building's security to do something, but she just ended up in an argument with the mom.
