Get a free HIV test on Wednesday at Walgreens in Ypsilanti

The Department's Division of Special Clinical Services will be offering free, confidential HIV testing all day on Wednesday June 27, from 1-4 p.m.; no appointment is required.

"The goal of the day is to effectively target groups disproportionately affected by the disease", said Virginie Fostroy, Aboriginal Outreach Worker of Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends anyone between the ages of 13 and 64 gets tested for HIV at least once as part of their routine health care. In June 2017, the programme once again excelled by exceeding the target of testing 1,000 people by 194.5 percent with 1945 people knowing their HIV status.

"It benefits everyone to get tested". That's a medication taken soon after unforeseen exposure to the HIV/AIDS virus to prevent infection. The rapid HIV test, with a simple finger poke, will provide HIV results in 30 minutes and can detect the HIV virus 14-15 days after infection.

It's an influence public figures like Henderson can use to bring the conversation of HIV prevention and treatment to the forefront; a cause advocates like Jeremy Hobbs has been championing for years.

The drug has been available at no cost when requested through the BC-CfE for eligible British Columbians, including men who have sex with men, transgender women, people with ongoing relationships with HIV-positive sex partners and people who inject drugs with a known HIV-positive partner.

Local and provincial health authorities across Canada are also collaborating to deliver the project, stating it addresses an unmet need in the current Canadian healthcare system.

Free HIV testing, HEP C testing, syphillis, and glucose screenings will be available on site.

"If a positive result is detected, blood draws will be administered, which will also be used to test for other STBBIs (Sexually transmissible and blood-borne infections)", according to the release.

The treatment is taken either before or after high-risk sex and is formally called pre- or post-exposure prophylaxis.
