Marcelo injury: Brazil doc gives weird reason for Real Madrid star's problem

Grant SmithJun 29, 2018

It was unclear what was wrong with the Real Madrid star as he had to leave the field so early on, but the doctor believes he suffered a muscle spasm.

Brazil's team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar claims that a hotel mattress could have caused the injury that forced Marcelo to miss the majority of Wednesday's 2018 World Cup clash with Serbia.

The Paris Saint-Germain superstar is expected to play a big role in tonight's final match of Group E against Serbia, where Brazil need a point to secure a place in the last 16.

Brazil coach Tite said: "I only know that he had a problem with his back".

"(Marcelo's injury may have been caused by) the mattress at the hotel where we were staying in Moscow", he said as quoted by The Sun.

"Marcelo has a medical history with this kind of injury", Lasmar said.

An opening game loss to Mexico (0-1) was followed by a dramatic late win against Sweden (2-1) but they were unable to continue the momentum as South Korea humbled Joachim Low's side 2-0 sealing their fate.

Brazil's next game at the tournament is next Monday afternoon's round-of-16 meeting with Mexico in Samara. "He said he locked up when he was leaving the pitch".

In the second game on Wednesday, Costa Rica and Switzerland drew 2-2 - Switzerland now has 5 points, while Costa Rica has one.
