Trump Will Make Supreme Court Pick, Anthony Kennedy Successor On July 9

The White House said Trump's team also spoke with more than a dozen additional senators. He said the president was pleased with the game plan that put Gorsuch on the bench, which involved a network of White House aides, congressional allies and outside advocates.

There were no direct efforts to pressure or lobby Justice Kennedy to announce his resignation on Wednesday, and it was hardly the first time a president had done his best to create a court opening.

Kennedy's retirement "sends a stark message to the tens of millions of Americans who have long turned to the court for the vindication of many of their most cherished rights and protections: Look somewhere else", wrote The New York Times editorial board.

Collins is inclined to support nominees - she has voted to confirm every Supreme Court pick that has come up for a Senate vote during her time in the Senate - but none may be as consequential as Kennedy's replacement.

There are several more paragraphs of detail, all of which are interesting enough but nothing particularly unusual. "As I said, I'm looking specifically at two women".

It has emerged that the Trump administration heavily courted Kennedy to retire before the mid-term elections, giving Trump the potential to nominate a justice with a known majority in the Senate. Justice Kennedy is bookish and abstract, while Mr. Trump is earthy and direct. But Republican Senator John McCain, who has an aggressive form of brain cancer, has been absent from the Senate for months, meaning that if all Senate Democrats vote against Trump's eventual nominee, it would take only one Republican defection to defeat his pick.

Trump made clear during the presidential campaign that he would appoint justices who would oppose abortion. "Heidi will vote "no" for any pick we make for the Supreme Court", Trump said. "It is hardly a coincidence that Kennedy retired with Trump in the Oval Office".

While Trump says he will review an existing list of 25 possible nominees, aides said only a few names can be considered serious contenders.

Because of Trump's inconsistent track record in business, which included filing for bankruptcy multiple times and being frequently sued, most other major banks would not lend to him.

This has, naturally, attracted the interest of Trump opponents.

"Say hello to your boy - special guy", Trump told Kennedy, alluding to Kennedy's son, Justin.

"That's a big one", the president responded. Trump relished the suspense of the final reveal, asking "So was that a surprise?"

As The Financial Times put it previous year, in the middle 1990s, Deutsche was looking for a foothold in the U.S. and "the bank saw a niche in serving rich developers who had hit a few bumps along the way, such as Harry Macklowe and Ian Bruce Eichner, both celebrated owners and losers of NY real estate". Donald Trump fit the bill to a tee.

Ninety percent of Democrats said the vacancy would make them more likely to vote for a Democratic Senate candidate in the November 6 election, compared with 81 percent of Republicans who said the issue would make them more likely to vote for a Senate candidate from their party. But it turns out he definitely was.

Among Trump's counselors is Leonard Leo, who is taking a leave of absence as executive vice president of the Federalist Society to serve as an outside adviser in the selection process. A review of Kennedy's bio suggests those twelve years were 1997 through 2009 - key years for Trump.
