Supreme Court ends term without retirement

The University of MI graduate was originally nominated to his current job by Bush in 2006, but due to opposition from Michigan's two Democratic senators, he was not confirmed until a compromise deal was reached two years later. "They're all saying 'don't do that, you shouldn't do that, '" Trump said.

Kennedy has announced his retirement, effective July 31. In a CNN exit poll, 70 percent of 2016 American voters said the Supreme Court was an important factor in their vote.

Without Kennedy, she said, the court would have overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case establishing a woman's right to abortion. "I think that's something the American people simply will not tolerate".

Trump announced he would nominate a replacement from a standing list of 25 possibilities, presumably the list he published in November 2017.

"The ruling shows that all the attacks from the media and the Democratic politicians were wrong, and they've always been very wrong", Trump said after the 5-4 ruling upholding the third iteration of his travel ban order as within the president's statutory and constitutional authority.

Prominent on the list of possible successors are Judges Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania and William Pryor of Alabama, who were seriously considered for the seat eventually filled by Gorsuch, and Judge Brett Kavanaugh, who serves on the federal appeals court in Washington. Kennedy's departure will allow Trump to shift the court decisively to the right, possibly for a generation, and opens the door to a rollback of access to abortion, gay rights and protections for minorities.

Other names on Trump's shortlist reportedly include former Kennedy clerk Raymond Kethledge; Amul Thapar, the preferred choice of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell; and Sen.

Trump has acted quickly on his selection process. Red-state Democrats are generally loathe to make their campaigns about social issues, and Heitkamp has preferred to work with the Trump administration on economic and energy grounds.

He was among several senators who met Thursday with Trump at the White House.

"Our Republican colleagues in the Senate should follow the rule they set in 2016: not to consider a Supreme Court justice in an election year", said the NY lawmaker.

Hardiman and Thapar were among the group interviewed by Trump before he selected Neil Gorsuch for a vacancy a year ago.

The Federalist Society is a nationwide organization of conservative lawyers who espouse conservative judicial philosophies. She said the group spent US$10 million supporting the Gorsuch confirmation. "I stressed the importance of nominating someone to the Supreme Court who is pragmatic, fair, compassionate, committed to justice, and above politics". "What we're seeing here is Gorsuch 2.0". As newly inaugurated President Barack Obama said in January 2009, "Elections have consequences, and at the end of the day, I won".

In a post on Twitter, Trump hailed the verdict as a moment of "profound vindication".

"It is exciting though, right?" said Trump.
