Big week: Trump, ahead of U.S. top court judge pick

Ismael LynchJul 02, 2018

With little more than a week before President Donald Trump announces his nominee to the highest court in the land, Trump sought to downplay some of his past comments about making opposition to legalized abortion a litmus test for his Supreme Court nominees.

Trump has previously said he is committed to nominating justices to the Supreme Court who would be willing to overturn the landmark case, which has long drawn the ire of anti-abortion activists and conservatives.

Trump responded by saying he assumed overturning Roe would happen "automatically" if he was able to appoint two or three justices to the bench as president. "As you know, there are many presidents who never get a choice".

In an interview airing on NBC's "Meet the Press", Graham said that the 1973 decision has been reaffirmed "in many different ways" in subsequent rulings, and that the precedent should be respected.

"I may have two of them come up, like the old days, to Bedminster", Trump said, referring to the staff and Cabinet interviews he held there in late 2016 during the presidential transition.

"That's not a question I'll be asking them", he said. "But I'm putting conservative people on, and I'm very proud of Neil Gorsuch".

In his Air Force One conversation with reporters, during the quick afternoon flight to New Jersey from Washington, Trump singled out one potential candidate for the court, Sen. "Probably not", the president told Fox News' Maria Bartiromo.

He said he is "very proud" of his successful nomination of conservative Justice Neil M. Gorsuch past year.

Lastly, the adviser said Trump wants his pick to "interpret the Constitution the way the framers meant it to be".

"That's a big one. You've got to hit every one of them".
