Lakers Dodged A Bullet Missing Out On Paul George

Grant SmithJul 04, 2018

George, who was among the most sought-after players in the current free agency, has agreed to a new four-year deal with Oklahoma City according to multiple local media reports. Newly signed players can not be immediately traded, however. The forward had until Friday to decide whether to opt in, which would have paid him $20.7 million in 2018-19, the last season of a five-year, $91.6 million deal he signed as a member of the Indiana Pacers. Rumors swirled that George will stay with the Thunder after Westbrook flew back to Oklahoma City amid a family vacation in Hawaii to arrange the party.

During the 2017-18 season, George saw his points (21.9), rebounds (5.7), field goal percentage (43.0), free throw percentage (82.2), points per 40 (24.0), rebound rate (8.6), true shooting percentage (57.0) and PER (18.71) all fall off.

Unless another team surpasses the Thunder this season (which is possible, given where the league's finances are going) that would easily make Oklahoma City the most expensive team in National Basketball Association history. It's possible George could end up being in Oklahoma City for seven more years. James was in Los Angeles and is also being pursued by the Lakers, who have enough salary-cap space to sign him and another star player. The Lakers obviously need to acquire more quality players that could help James beat the mighty Golden State Warriors for the Western Conference supremacy and the team that will represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals 2019. Philadelphia would instantly vault from conference contender to favorite with James, who could make a strong run at his ninth straight Finals in Year One. The wide-eyes emoji was favored by other players, including Lakers draftee Moritz Wagner, as well as the Kings' Buddy Hield, the Trail Blazers' Jusuf Nurkic and free agent Marreese Speights.

The deal he signed is four years, but three of those years are guaranteed with the fourth one being a play option.

Mixed emotions over having LeBron James on my favorite team?

Now Paul George is saying that the Lakers screwed up their chance to bring him home to L.A.

If he is set on going to the Lakers, another team that trades for Leonard will have to contend with that reputation for stubbornness. The Mavericks finally are getting DeAndre Jordan. "I wanted to come here a year ago prior to going to OKC".

The Denver Nuggets added to the huge night of spending out West when it got Will Barton to commit to staying in what will be a four-year deal that could be worth more than $50 million if he doesn't opt out a year early, and that move comes on the cusp of the Nuggets getting talented big man Nikola Jokic to stay in what will be a five-year deal worth almost $150 million.
