Former champs Sharapova, Kvitova crash out, Nadal, Djokovic through

Maria Sharapova lost in the first round at Wimbledon after fellow Russian Vitalia Diatchenko came from a set and a break down to oust the former champion.

Petra Kvitova crashed out of Wimbledon in the first round on Tuesday as the two-time champion was stunned 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 by unheralded Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

World number one Rafael Nadal breezed into the second round with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 win over Israel's Dudi Sela as the Spaniard returned to action for the first time since claiming his 11th French Open title.

France's Caroline Garcia, seeded six, was also beaten Tuesday, going down 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 to Switzerland's Belinda Bencic.

"Unfortunately I didn't play my best tennis but I have to credit her, she didn't give anything to me", said Swan, who later lost 6-3 6-2 alongside Boulter to women's doubles 14th seeds Lucie Hradecka and Su-Wei Hsieh.

There was also an easy win for top seed Simona Halep, who beat Japan's Kurumi Nara 6-2 6-3.

"I was nervous today, but I don't think it was because she was a crowd favorite", said Osaka.

Despite the 2011 and 2014 Wimbledon champion being vastly more experienced than Sasnovich - who has never been beyond the third round at a grand slam - Kvitova was the one overcome by nerves in the deciding set.

"I definitely started this year with looking to rebuild my match fitness, match confidence, identity in how I want to conduct myself, how I want to play out there".

"Probably I was the biggest opponent I could have".

"I think my identity is a bit clearer now than even I think it was a year ago". Probably in Wimbledon it's a little bit more than the other Grand Slams because obviously I know I can play well, which probably is bad.

"But it is how it is".

After an even first set Konta upped her game at the right time to break Vikhlyantseva at 5-5 and close it out. "After that it's fine".

Having served out the opening set, Konta immediately broke again, turning an awkward-looking return into a breathtaking cross-court victor. Reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open, defeating 8th seed Venus Williams along on the way, earmarked Konta as a future British tennis flag bearer, a player who could inspire the next generation of young British girls to pick up a racket and go on to reach the top of the game.

A pre-tournament favourite, Kvitova had already won five titles coming to Wimbledon and her grass-court game looked in ideal shape after she won the title in Edgbaston last monrh.

Johanna Konta can blame the peerless CV of Serena Williams for the fact that she has to face a player as risky as Dominika Cibulkova on Thursday afternoon on Centre Court.

"I'm back. It's always good, I'm thinking to win and actually enjoy this time more", Muguruza told BBC Sport.

"I'm pretty happy with my serve and controlling the emotions, " Muguruza said. However, she will have a hard second round as she has to face someone who also loves playing on grass. She then cracked a smile to add, "I could play better". That's crucial, to be able to keep putting the work in. The Brit is the better player overall and on grass, though her recent inconsistency means there is a chance for a surprise.
