Horner: Mercedes' apology to Hamilton was 'bizarre'

Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO, Andrew Westacott, is thrilled that Melbourne will once again host the coveted first race of the FIA Formula One World Championship season.

This year's grand prix was held from March 22-25, welcoming nearly 300,000 fans over four days as Melbourne hosted the opening round of the 2018 season, which saw Sebastian Vettel victorious for the second year running.

"Obviously, we know it was a hard weekend and of course we would have all hoped, wished that it wasn't the way it was but what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger and honestly the spirit within the team is stronger than it has ever been", continued Hamilton.

Mercedes' chief strategist James Vowles came on the team radio to take responsibility for the mistake in a very honest, yet surprising decision in the middle of a race.

"These experiences we've been having and how we've been handling them, have really united us more than any other year". "I think that obviously Mercedes has got so used to being at the front, qualifying on the front row, and any at race that they are not on the podium it is disastrous".

"But I have every confidence in my team that we will be able to bounce back".

Lewis Hamilton returns to his home ground and will be looking to bounce back from last week's nightmare showing where both himself and team mate Valtteri Bottas failed to finish the race.

"I think that if you look at Mercedes' history, the team is basically what Ross [Brawn] put in place several years ago". The second Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo who was running in second place at one point, had to retire with a gearbox issue. The amount of pressure, the amount of simulations that go on, the amount of engineers, there's a lot tough calls for each team to make. That's just how it is. "I hope they're sleeping well, I hope they're eating well because that's a large part of it, and ultimately just going out and enjoying themselves".

"The luck I'm having this year feels like a bit of a bad joke at the moment", said Bottas, who had collided with Vettel at the start of the previous race in France.
