These Democrats want to abolish ICE

Winter Park businessman Chris King "believes any comprehensive immigration reform effort should take a hard look at real reforms to ICE as an agency", a spokesman said. "But it's just as important to get something done, to make things better than they are right now", O'Rourke said. "What are they going to do with all these risky people that are here?"

The issue is getting traction after this week's surprise upset by 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who made "Abolish ICE" a central tenet of her campaign against Rep. Joe Crowley, who had been the king of Queens. "Part of the reason for that is that they are able to access the city's residential data", said protester Anlin Wang.

Locally, protesters are calling on Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, who has been an outspoken advocate for immigrant rights, to end the city's Preliminary Arraignment Reporting System (PARS) data sharing contract with ICE.

The Trump administration has flatly rejected that option, saying it would amount to "catch and release" - when illegal immigrants are processed and released into the community on the usually false hope that they will return for their deportation hearings. And if Penn's findings are correct, most Americans are now closer to President Trump than present-day Democratic leaders.

"I don't think ICE today is working as intended", Gillibrand said Thursday night on CNN's "Cuomo PrimeTime". "They are carrying out Trump's policies". The majority of the country sides with Democrats on immigration in general.

A Quinnipiac University national survey released Tuesday found that almost six in 10 voters do not approve of how Trump has responded to immigration-related issues, including 95 percent of Democrats, 60 percent of independents and 16 percent of Republicans. It employs more than 20,000 people.

The movement also has support from Migrant Justice, an advocacy organization that represents immigrant farmer workers in the state.

The president called Democrats "weak" on immigration and twice mentioned the November elections - where immigration and his administration's "zero tolerance" policy at the border will be a top issue.

Many Democrats think that turning the debate away from Trump's immigration policies and back to a fight over which party is stronger on border security is a loser for Democrats.

The country seems divided on whether or not Trump is racist.

However, he said there could be concern around immigration enforcement more broadly.

O'Rourke: I would start by ensuring that Dreamers - more than a million across the country, nearly 200,000 in the state of Texas - are immediately protected from deportation, and then on the same day, granted USA citizenship so that they can contribute to their full potential. Current law allows Border Patrol to do so. But government data show that monthly crossings along the border with Mexico are much lower than they were years ago, even though there has been a significant increase in border crossings in the past few months when compared with the same period last year.
