England ousts Colombia in shootout thriller

Grant SmithJul 07, 2018

England finally overcame almost 30 years of penalty pain when they beat Colombia 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday after drawing their World Cup last-16 clash 1-1 following extra time after the South Americans had equalised in the 93rd minute.

England and Colombia are vying for the last spot in the quarterfinals with the 3 Lions determined to win this game and continue their stay in the tournament. It has felt like a home game in every game for us. England, it has to be said, were by no means blameless but the way Pekerman reacted afterwards suggested his team were the ones on the end of most of the unsavoury antics. "They play very structured from the back, sit quite deep from what we've seen and we know what we're up against. I think there is exaggeration on theatre by the players", he told Russia Today. There were lots of penalty incidents with Panama and Tunisia. "There was a lot of rhythm and speed but as soon as the ball was in the box my players were not cool and composed". It's hurtful. You have to try and stand in the shoes of the players.

"It's obviously their image and how they've represented their country", Stones said Thursday. These interruptions are bad. "But we have played tough matches that have made us stronger, more confident and with more belief in ourselves". If England think they will have an easy match on Saturday that is a big mistake. "It has been obvious, too obvious". Or, at half-time, Raheem Sterling appearing to be on the end of a deliberate elbow from one of the Colombian coaching staff.

In the last few days Federation Internationale de Football Association have made it clear that more scrutiny has be given to attackers being hauled down in the penalty area.

"England are a good team, but we did not mind who it was we would face", Ospina continued.

"He always made calls to favour England", declared Falcao. "He can not be put in to referee a match of this magnitude". He didn't act with the same criteria for both teams.

Beat Sweden, and England has a game against Croatia or host nation Russian Federation to reach a first World Cup final since 1966.

Kane was the most talked about player on Twitter on the night, followed by Colombia's goalscorer Yerry Mina, James Rodriguez, Colombia's star man who missed the game through injury, Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina and Dier. In a World Cup full of thrilling unpredictability, the only downside has been some of the appalling indiscipline. I'm very happy for them. It started with Carlos Sánchez getting sent off within three minutes of their opener against Japan, a game they went on to lose 2-1.
