President Donald Trump to meet with Queen Elizabeth II but avoid protesters

The visit, which coincides with Theresa May's second anniversary as Prime Minister, is expected to be met by protests, including the flying of a blimp depicting the 45th president of the USA as an angry orange baby over London.

He said the highlight will be the chance for the president and first lady to meet the queen.

Trump will arrive from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels on Thursday and will attend a black-tie dinner at Blenheim Palace, a country house near Oxford where Churchill was born in 1874. Later Friday the president will travel to Windsor Castle, west of London, for an audience with Queen Elizabeth II.

His itinerary for the Scotland visit has not yet been released.

President Trump is expected to spend Thursday night in London before meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May in Buckinghamshire.

While the president is in the capital, the giant "Trump Baby" balloon will be flown over Westminster after authorities gave the OK for the protest.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has given permission for the balloon - a "six-metre-high, orange, inflatable baby with a malevolent face and tiny hands", according to organisers - to fly over London while Trump meets Prime Minister Theresa May at 10 Downing Street on July 13.

Asked whether Trump's schedule was created to keep him away from protests, a Downing Street spokesman said: 'Prime ministers frequently make use of Chequers for meetings with foreign leaders.

They will both then travel to Chequers for bilateral talks on foreign policy.

Number 10 insisted there was a long history of British PMs entertaining United States and other leaders at the 16th century manor house, which offered a "more informal setting" for important one-to-one talks.

"We are a free and open democracy, and we believe in the right to peaceful protest". I would also say that I think the majority of British people understand the importance of the UK-US alliance.

Mr Trump will fly straight from Scotland at the end of the weekend to Finland where he has a crunch meeting with Mr Putin.

"Trump's visit is an important moment to recognise our close relationship", a spokeswoman for May told reporters.

Mr Trump's trip is classed as an official visit, rather than the full-scale state visit, hosted by the queen, for which May invited Mr Trump soon after his January 2017 inauguration.

The black-tie dinner at Blenheim Palace, the country estate where Winston Churchill was born, will nonetheless see considerable ceremony, including the bands of Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards welcoming Trump, and an orchestra serenading diners with "classic British and American hits".

The guest list for the dinner includes business leaders from a range of sectors and is meant to celebrate the links between the two nations - set to take on new importance in a post-Brexit world.

On Friday morning, Trump will join May at a still-undisclosed site to observe "cutting edge military capabilities and integrated UK-US military training".

That was expected to be followed by talks with May at Chequers and a working lunch.
