Defending champion Roger Federer was again on great form as he comfortably beat Lukas Lacko 6-4, 6-4, 6-1.

Top seed Federer, the eight-time champion, goes on to face either 39-year-old Ivo Karlovic of Croatia or Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff. Venus is attempting to win her 50th career title, while Federer is after his 21st Grand Slam. Marin Cilic briefly resumed his match with Guido Pella on No. 1 Court, but another shower saw them depart with the third-seeded Croatian leading 6-3, 6-1, 3-4 - a break down in the third set.

Meanwhile, Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova was knocked out of the tournament after slumping to a shocking 7-6, 6-7, 4-6 defeat at the hands of fellow Russian player Vitalia Diatchenko.

Spare a thought for Kristina Mladenovic, who is next in the crosshairs of seven-time victor Serena Williams.

The 28-year-old came from two sets down to beat Ivo Karlovic 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 13-11 in a match that lasted almost four hours. The 30-year-old Makarova took down Wozniacki 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to bring the Danish star's tournament to a surprisingly quick conclusion. "Oh, I didn't know that", he said sounding bemused. She promptly reeled off 12 of the next 13 games to wrap up a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory.

"I'm happy I found a way today".

Day 3 at Wimbledon was prematurely ended by rain. In total, he lost just nine of 61 points on his serve and broke Lacko five times, including a dominant forehand victor to claim the match win.

"I felt much more confident in my game, I served better and I felt so pumped", said Pella, who reached the third round of a major for the first time. Within seconds he added with a smile: "I'm happy whatever they say, as long as it is "game" and my name and not "game" and the other (person's) name".

"I don't necessarily have to win another Wimbledon in my career", she was saying Friday, making a point about not having anything left to prove, "(because) I won - was it six times?"

"I always have this sort of dream, I just want to walk past them and speak to these people to hear their stories". It's just about winning the match.
