The Klamathon Fire that broke out Thursday south of the Oregon-California border exploded in size Friday to almost 22.000 acres and spread into Oregon as one person was reported killed and 40 structures destroyed, with another 350 homes threatened in the two states.

A civilian has died due to the Klamathon Fire, CAL FIRE reported Friday morning.

The county issued a local emergency declaration, saying the fire "is causing conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons".

Fire crews are battling a rapidly growing wildfire that sparked this afternoon.

The new blazes came as Southern California saw many areas top 38 degrees Celsius on Friday and more than a dozen areas got record-breaking temperatures for the day.

Significant resources are also being utilized in Siskiyou County's Klamathon Fire, where DC-10 aircraft stationed at McClellan Park attacked the fire Friday.

Authorities said the blaze started with a house fire and gusty winds reportedly were pushing the flames.

The worst of this week's heat wave hit Southern California on Friday, sparking several brush fires, including one that was burning numerous homes and other structures in San Diego County.

ODOT said conditions could change depending on fire behavior throughout the day.

Flames ravage a home in Goleta on July 7, 2018. Hundreds of people living and working in the vicinity have been evacuated.

Near Los Angeles, Cal Fire was battling the 100-acre Valley Fire and the 100-acre Box Fire (15 percent contained), both in San Bernardino County.

Mandatory evacuations effective Saturday morning were in the area between Cathedral Oaks Road and West Camino Cielo Road, and between La Patera Lane and North Patterson Avenue, according to the Sheriff's Department. At the time of writing the fire is zero percent contained. A situation summary from Cal Fire Saturday morning noted "extreme fire behavior with movement in multiple directions". Around a dozen structures near the unincorporated town of Hornbrook have been destroyed.

The fire spans about 75 square miles (193 square kilometers) near a popular fishing reservoir about 80 miles (130 kilometers) southeast of Salt Lake City, according to the Utah Division Forestry Fire State Lands.
