Manu Ginobili, Gregg Popovich wish Tony Parker the best in Charlotte

Grant SmithJul 08, 2018

The Charlotte Hornets have a deal in principle to sign Frenchman Tony Parker as their veteran backup to point guard Kemba Walker, an National Basketball Association source confirmed to the Observer.

"The last straw for him, I was told, was when Tony Parker made those comments about 'my quad injury was 100 times worse.' And if you remember, shortly after, Kawhi Leonard left San Antonio and didn't want to be a part of that media glare there, and did not come back until the season was over with". The new coach, James Borrego, is a former Spurs assistant who knows Parker well.

The point guard was a true cornerstone of the San Antonio franchise as he is only the third player in National Basketball Association history to play at least 17 seasons with one team before leaving alongside Karl Malone (18 seasons) and Hakeem Olajuwon (17 seasons). Parker has spent the last 17 seasons with the Spurs winning four NBA Championships and being named to six All-Star teams during that run.

He's just done in San Antonio.

With all the Kawhi Leonard drama, Parker's free agency this offseason was overshadowed. Duncan has retired, Parker is now gone and Ginobili's status for next season is unknown. Plus, the Hornets already have one of Parker's friends, fellow Frenchman Nic Batum. "All of us in the Spurs organization will miss having Tony in our program and wish him and his family the best as he continues his remarkable career in Charlotte".

Buyout terms with Howard, who was due to make $24 million this season, were progressing Friday and Nets general manager Sean Marks said they should be wrapped up quickly.

Spurs fans have known for a few years now that the 36-year-old was coming near to the end of his playing career with the team, and many thought leadership control of the team would transfer over to Kawhi Leonard.
