Mother Teresa charity shocked after India babies 'sold'

The Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic order founded by Mother Teresa in India, said it was "carefully looking into" charges of baby trafficking leveled against a nun and a worker at one of its homes.

The CWC members later questioned the nuns present at Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity over the missing child and were told that the mother had taken away the child.

A mother and baby home in India set up by Mother Teresa has been accused of selling babies off to married couples.

In Mother House in Kolkata, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, there has been shock and disbelief. "We contacted the mother and she told us that she does not have the child". Many turn to charities such as Mother Teresa's for shelter during their pregnancies.

Saurabh Kumar Agarwal and wife Priti claimed they had paid Rs 1.20 lakh to Nirmal Hriday on May 1 after which they were handed over a baby boy on May 14.

A nun and a staff member of the Missionaries of Charity (MoC) in Ranchi have been arrested on the charge of selling a baby to a childless couple and sent to jail, while another nun is being detained by the police.

"We have found out that some other babies have also been illegally sold from the centre", a police official told BBC Hindi's Niraj Sinha.

According to police, six newborn babies have been sold to childless couple in the last one year.

The CWC in the recent past has been constantly monitoring the situation at the Missionaries of Charity. The spokeswoman said that the charity hadn't taken money from parents while facilitating adoptions in the past.

As per norms, any child or girl brought to a shelter home has to be reported to the CWC and any adoption done according to Central Adoption Resource Authority guidelines.

The arrests were made on the basis of a complaint filed by Rupa Verma yesterday, the chairperson of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of Ranchi district, they said.

The child is now in a government shelter for children.

The Missionaries of Charity did not respond to calls for comment.

He said: "It should never have happened; it is completely against our moral conviction".

A spokesperson for Missionaries of Charity Sunita Kumar said their superior-general, Sister Prema, was away from the country and was expected back later this month. "We will take necessary precautions if anything like this has happened".
