Two More Britons Poisoned by Nerve Agent Used on Ex-Spy

Howard TerryJul 08, 2018

Two British citizens are critically ill after they were exposed to Novichok, the same nerve agent that struck down a former Russian agent and his daughter in March, Britain's top counter-terrorism officer said on Wednesday.

Samples were taken from the couple on Monday "due to concern over the symptoms" and sent to the military laboratory at nearby Porton Down, according to head of counterterrorism Neil Basu.

"A Wiltshire police officer is seeking medical advice at Salisbury District Hospital in connection with the ongoing incident in Amesbury".

Police have been unable to locate the source of the contamination and have warned that they can not rule out more people falling ill.

Emergency workers in protective suits search around John Baker House Sanctuary Supported Living after a major incident was declared when a man and woman were exposed to the Novichok nerve agent on July 6, 2018 in Salisbury, England.

Police said they had established that the couple were exposed to the nerve agent after "handling a contaminated item" that may have been used in the attempted murder on the Skripals.

Hours later, an ambulance was called at around 0915 GMT to treat a woman who had lost consciousness at a house in Muggleton Road in Amesbury, where Hobson said Rowley lived. "We would like to reiterate the advice from Public Health England that the risk to the wider public remains low".

The Swindon Advertiser reported tonight that the patient had now been moved to Salisbury District Hospital.

Uglev and other experts say it may never be possible to determine the nerve agent's origin.

Instead, there will have to be a laborious physical search of suspected sites.

On March 4, former Russian military intelligence officer Sergei Skripal, 66, who had been convicted in Russia for spying for the United Kingdom, and his daughter Yulia, 33, were found unconscious on a bench near the Maltings shopping center in Salisbury, England.

A government scientist told the BBC on Thursday that the agent can be degraded by water and sunlight, meaning it was unlikely the contamination took place in the open, and said that it was so toxic that it could pass through the skin.

President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said Russian Federation is concerned about the case but had nothing to do with either poisoning.

"Based upon the number of casualties affected, it is not believed that there is a significant health risk to the wider public", said the Wiltshire Police, adding that it was not yet known whether the two were the victims of a crime.

Speaking to parliament on Thursday, Interior Minister Sajid Javid said a link between the cases was "clearly the main line of inquiry" and demanded Moscow explain itself. And the British government owed Russian Federation an apology, she said.

"That means that if a container or a surface was contaminated with this material it would remain a danger for a long time", Sella said.

Another unknown at this point is where exactly the two came into contact with Novichok.
