Wimbledon: Alexander Zverev battles illness to stay in contention

Grant SmithJul 10, 2018

Bad light on Wimbledon's Court One caused play to be suspended late on Thursday, with fourth seed Zverev struggling and trailing the world number 68 by two sets to one.

The fourth seed had a tougher time against Fritz than eighth seed Kevin Anderson did against Philipp Kohlschreiber, with the German served into straight-sets submission 6-3, 7-5, 7-5.

"It's a wonderful feeling walking out there, I try to put on a good match and try hard every time, regardless of how many times I've played at Wimbledon". He came down with a stomach bug that affected him during his two-day, five-set victory over Taylor Fritz of the U.S.in the second round and felt exhausted down the stretch against Gulbis.

The 21-year-old German didn't feel much better when he returned to court on Friday morning and considering pulling out during the on-court warm-up. But I felt very low on energy.

Meanwhile, Zverev seemed to have the match under control when he rallied from a break down to take the third set.

He will next face Ernests Gulbis.

"It's great to see him doing this well, because I think he is such a talented player and he can play on a very high level", Ostapenko said about Gulbis. "And I actually thought I didn't play that bad - I just started to feel very exhausted". You know, I'm going to have my chances. I mean, the way he plays.

Whilst the Latvian does have a powerful first serve, his second is unreliable, so if he is forced to serve twice too often then Nishikori will likely take advantage.

Kiki Bertens grabbed a decisive break in the 18th game to beat ninth-seeded Venus Williams 6-2 6-7 (5) 8-6 and reach the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time.

'I was exhausted from probably having a stomach bug, not eating for over 24 hours, ' he said.

Juan Martín del Potro outpowered Benoît Paire 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

"I think he's a future grand slam victor", Gulbis said.

Gael Monfils eliminated last year's semi-finalist Sam Querrey, winning 5-7 6-4 6-4 6-2 to progress to the fourth round at the All England Club for the first time in his career.

Despite being widely-tipped to be a Grand Slam threat, it was another let-down for Zverev whose run to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last month remains his best performance at the Majors. I'm playing third round tomorrow.
