Bertens stuns Pliskova as last top 10 seed falls

Grant SmithJul 11, 2018

Rodina, who like Williams combines a tennis career with motherhood, looked overawed at first as she went 3-0 down.

Serena Williams, 51? Eh, it doesn't have that same ring to it.

The absence of the top 10 seeds leaves the tournament open, but for some that is no surprise.

No. 7 Karolina Pliskova, the last of the top-10 women, lost 6-3, 7-6 (1) to Kiki Bertens.

Shrieking and clenching her fists after every key point that went her way, Serena let out a gutteral "C'mon" once she wrapped up the set. "We've played so many tough matches", Kerber said after she finally sealed the win on her seventh match point. She missed past year because of her pregnancy but is on an 18-match winning run at the All England Club.

Jelena Ostapenko and Dominika Cibulkova will also meet in Tuesday's quarterfinals.

"Sometimes I feel, 'Man, I'm in trouble, ' she said after the match".

After going a couple of weeks without hitting a serve, Williams has regained her ability with that stroke nicely at Wimbledon.

Pliskova, at seven, was the highest seed to reach the fourth round after an extraordinary first week of upsets but her hopes of further progress evaporated on a stiflingly hot Court Two.

Shot making and shot selection produced a clear gameplan for the fifth Italian woman to clinch the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, watched by the Fed Cup captain Tathiana Garbin, the first Italian player to beat a reigning world No.1 at WTA level (she defeated Justine Henin at 2004 French Open).

When she served for it a second time, she needed to navigate a 16-point game that included five deuces and all of those match points, until forcing a forehand error on the last.

In the first set, Giorgi hit twice more groundstrokes with her feet inside the baseline than Williams.

Goerges had failed to make it past the fourth round of any major before this tournament, and her best Wimbledon finishes were third-round appearances in 2010 and 2011.

Ostapenko was more efficient, serving her match out at love and converting her first match point with her 14th backhand victor.

She hit one at 122 miles per hour against Giorgi, delivered six of her seven aces in the final set, and won 44 of the last 54 points she served.

"But I'm just very glad the way I handled everything today because it wasn't an easy match at all". The two met last month in the second round at the French Open, with Williams winning in straight sets. Del Potro was leading Simon two sets to one when their match was suspended because of darkness Monday night.
