Dozens of immigrant children in US set to reunite with parents

The distance between many children and their parent or parents have been coupled with logistical challenges and resulted in a major bureaucratic snag. According to government attorneys, nine have parents who have already been deported, while an additional nine have parents that have been released from government custody in the United States.

Ms. Fabian said even more than the 54 could be released depending on whether Judge Sabraw orders the government to short-circuit its usual checks it makes before releasing children to sponsors in the U.S.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing the parents in a class-action lawsuit, said USA officials "have not even tried" to return 12 children to parents who were deported, and said officials should have more quickly found eight parents who have been released in the United States.

Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project, said: "The court is holding the Trump administration's feet to the fire to get these kids reunited with their parents".

Protesters in New York City marched last month in support of the families separated at U.S. -Mexico border.

But Gelernt took issue with the administration's "continued insistence on using the longer reunification process" - procedures HHS uses for children who arrive to the U.S. alone.

These provisions included DNA testing and background checks on unrelated people who might end up living in the same home as the reunited family.

A federal judge told the Trump administration on Tuesday to lay off using some of its most stringent vetting procedures before reuniting families separated at the border. "This is a cruel and harmful policy that was aggravated by the Administration's lack of basic humanity in thinking ahead of time about how it would bring these families back together".

"They're working nights and weekends to comply with the judge's orders". Afterwards, the ACLU expanded its suit on behalf of the other parents and children the government planned to imminently separate.

"But until I have both my children with me, I don't know what I will do", she said. But only 56 out of about 85 children under five who are eligible for reunification will have been reunited with their parents by the Tuesday deadline. An additional 20 children have purported parents with whom they can not be reunited because those adults have already been either removed from the United States or released into the country, which removes DHS and HHS's ability to force them to come get the children they claim are theirs. As of Sunday evening, however, the ACLU said the government was on track to reunite less than half of those with their families. If the parent is actually in criminal custody now, reunification can not occur.

Federal officials said they are reunifying as many children as they can and attributed delays to "legitimate logistical impediments" that make it "impossible or excusable" to meet the court's deadlines. He told the two sides to discuss possible exceptions and report to him Monday.

Nine have parents who were released already from ICE custody and are somewhere in the US.
