Eight soccer players rescued from cave, 4 more remain trapped

A treacherous rescue bid to free a youth football team trapped in a flooded Thai cave entered its second day Monday, with nine of the "Wild Boars" still inside after elite divers guided four out. Authorities have said extracting the entire team from the cave could take up to four days, but two straight days of success raised hopes that it could be done faster.

"We'll start preparing for the next rescue operation, and we believe we'll do better than today and it will be highly successful", the rescue mission chief said.

The high-risk rescue dive began with a sense of urgency after authorities failed to settle on an alternative means of bringing the boys out.

Narongsak had dubbed yesterday to be "D-day" as the complicated effort was launched in the morning.

The source said the boys arrived at the chamber at 4pm after being rescued by foreign and Navy Seal divers from the ledge where they had sheltered from floodwaters for more than a week. Each boy is being accompanied by two divers and it takes hours to negotiate the flooded tunnels through the dark, murky water. The device could be used to rescue one boy at a time as it has space to fit in one person with his arms crossed, he said. Thai Navy SEALs later announced two more had been freed in what Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn called a "very smooth operation".

"The prime minister said that this kind of event should never happen again on Thai soil", Narongsak told reporters.

Rescuers had planned to take a 10- to 20-hour pause in the rescue efforts to replenish the cave with oxygen and give the team of 18 divers leading the boys on the hard journey a chance to rest.

Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda had said early Monday that the same group of expert divers who took part in Sunday's rescue would return to extricate the others because they know the cave conditions and what to do. Monsoon flooding blocked off their escape and prevented rescuers from finding them for nearly 10 days. More than 1,000 journalists from across the world have descended on northern Thailand to report the story.

UPDATE 0841 ET: The rescue operation has been suspended for the night in Thailand. Since then, an worldwide team of engineers, rescuers and divers has been delivering supplies and food to the children and their coach ― and mulling ways to best help them escape. Some, he says, may withdraw while others may seek more attention. He posted a video of a diver testing the device in a pool. "Very fearless and talented people!"

The divers also brought out touching notes for the families written by some of the trapped boys.

As the divers will try and get out the remaining children in the following hours, Elon Musk is stepping up his efforts to lend a hand, should the need arise.

Pad Krapao is a basil rice meal with stir-fried pork or chicken, topped with a fried egg. "With love." "Don't be anxious", wrote another boy, Mick.

One particularly touching note from another boy said: "I'm doing fine, but the air is a little cold, but don't worry. Although, don't forget to set up my birthday party".

"To the parents of all the kids, right now the kids are all fine, the crew are taking good care".
