Grandfather Beaten with Concrete Block, Told ‘Go Back to Your Own Country’

Rodriguez told authorities that he accidentally bumped into a woman's small daughter on his daily walk.

Rodriguez was released from the hospital Thursday.

Misbel Borjas, who saw the incident and captured it via her phone, told CNN that she attacked the elderly man, telling him to "go back to your country, go back to Mexico".

Mendoza told CBS Los Angeles that his grandfather speaks little or no English and didn't understand why he was being attacked.

Los Angeles Sheriff's Department are investigating the attack and have appealed for witnesses. Rodriguez-a permanent resident, per the Washington Post-says he was headed to a Willowbrook park when he passed a woman who "hit me until she was done". The man also believed he heard the woman say, "Go back to your country" or "Go back to Mexico".

The beating left Rodriguez with several injuries, including a bruised and battered face, a broken cheekbone, head injuries, and bruised ribs. Per KTLA, Rodriguez was able to identify his attacker from video footage of the incident, which follows a 52% increase in anti-Hispanic and anti-Latino crimes in California in 2017, reports the Sacramento Bee.

"We are concerned, especially with the type of crime they committed", Deputy D'Angelo Robinson told KCBS.

Mendoza later told news channel KTLA-TV that he couldn't believe anyone would do that to an elderly man.

"How can you hurt a 92-year-old man?" "What kind of harm can he mean to anyone?" "There was what appears to be a 4-year-old child there who witnessed the entire thing", he said. "That's why we're still in shock, as you can see he's badly injured".

A GoFundMe account has been established to help pay Rodriguez's medical costs.

A GoFundMe campaign established by Mendoza for his grandfather's medical expenses has already blown way past its $15,000 goal, raising almost $200,000.

There are slight discrepancies in reporting now, as to whether three or four men joined the African American woman in beating Rodriguez, and as to whether all of them were African American. There are no current leads on the three or four male suspects who beat Rodriguez.
