Here's what Susan Collins said about Trump's Supreme Court pick

President Donald Trump's selection of Brett Kavanaugh as his choice for the U.S. Supreme Court would give the court a decidedly conservative majority for years to come, experts say, although it's unclear exactly how that ideological shift would play out over time.

The director did not mention how Mr. Kavanaugh's 12 years on the US appeals court failed to draw the attention of doomsday activists until now.

In an interview on Monday, Kavanaugh told CBS News that his mother, who was a state prosecutor in Maryland, had a trademark line: "Use your common sense, what rings true, what rings false".

The judge emphasized that no one is above the law, but he pointed out that the Constitution already provides a solution if there's a scoundrel in the White House. He thought that impeachment was an adequate check, "if a president does something dastardly".

Democrats remained firmly committed to blocking Kavanaugh's nomination while Republicans touted his qualifications.

At 53, Kavanaugh is relatively young.

Earthjustice, a nonprofit environmental law organization, said it opposes Kavanaugh's nomination because "his overly restrictive approach to agency authority, and limited view of the public's right to access the courts, could jeopardize the ability of federal agencies to carry out their vital missions and threaten the American public's access to justice". McConnell, who called Kavanaugh a "superb choice", hasn't explicitly said whether his goal is to complete a confirmation before the November midterm elections.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh's views on hot-button issues like abortion are under a microscope after he was nominated by President Trump to serve on the Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh wrote that civil suits and criminal investigations take away from a president's focus on his or her work responsibilities.

Trump's success in confirming conservative judges, as well as a Supreme Court justice, has cheered Republicans amid concerns about his limited policy achievements and chaotic management style.

NOM and other conservative groups have launched massive lobbying operations in favour of Kavanaugh, who was vetted by the anti-LGBT Heritage Foundation and Federalist Society, both of whom have strongly opposed anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people.

In his 2006 confirmation hearing for the D.C. Circuit, New York Democratic Sen. "That would be binding precedent of the court".

As how Kavanaugh would rule on the highest court, perhaps the most encouraging evidence comes from a speech he delivered past year to the American Enterprise Institute on the legal philosophy of the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist, whom he called "my first judicial hero".

The reaction of her constituents in ME to Kavanaugh's nomination has been "very mixed", she said.

On the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, Kavanaugh wrote in 2011 that a federal law known as the Anti-Injunction Act, which covers tax issues, meant that the court lacked the ability to consider whether the law's individual mandate violated the Constitution.

"The Supreme Court will ultimately decide if almost 800,000 West Virginians with pre-existing conditions will lose their health care", he said on Twitter.

Walker said Kennedy's replacement will be much more conservative, foreshadowing big changes in issues including affirmative action, school prayer and guns. "This decision will directly impact nearly 40 percent of my state, so I'm very interested in his position".

One measure of a judge's influence is how many of his clerks wind up working in the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Warren Burger, who delivered the opinion, had been appointed by Nixon in 1969 and was considered a conservative.

He has likened himself to the official behind home plate calling balls and strikes.

"We look forward to the confirmation process, which will unfold in the next few weeks", McConnell said, ignoring a question about whether Democrats would support the nomination.
