Trump Administration Readies Tariffs On $200 Billion Of Chinese Imports

Lighthizer's office will hear public comments on the plan and will reach a decision after August 31, according to a senior administration official who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity.

"Consumers, businesses and the American jobs dependent on trade, are left in the crosshairs of an escalating global trade war", said Hun Quach, the head of worldwide trade policy for the group.

The tariff list could be released as soon as Tuesday, and likely this week, the report said.

The U.S. said it had no choice but to move forward on the new tariffs after China failed to respond to the administration's concerns over unfair trade practices and Beijing's abuse of American intellectual property, according to two senior officials who spoke to reporters.

The United States began imposing tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese goods at 12:01 a.m. EDT (0401 GMT) on Friday. "There is no justification for such action".

The U.S.is now considering levying duties on a further $16 billion in Chinese goods, after a public hearing later this month.

Tne Trump administration has announced additional China tariffs, say insiders.

A senior administration official told Fox News that China has been "non-responsive" to USA actions and has insisted that Beijing does not see any way America has been hurt by Chinese policies.

The president of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, Mats Harborn, said Tuesday one of its members moved final assembly of goods for the American market from China to a newly created USA company. The trade war could also jeopardize China's help in confronting North Korea's nuclear program.

Administration officials said they hoped the measures would convince the Chinese government to increase market access for U.S. companies and address allegations of the theft of intellectual property.

The press offices for the U.S. Trade Representative's office and White House didn't immediately comment when Bloomberg News contacted them.

Beijing has vowed to respond in kind to any US trade action. But Mr Trump hasn't backed down, arguing that China's unfair trading practices are hurting American workers.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has supported Mr Trump's tax cuts and efforts to reduce regulation of businesses, also criticised the administration's move.
