U.S. service member killed in ‘insider attack’ in Afghanistan

The Taliban released a statement on Twitter saying an Afghan soldier fired on US troops in the province of Uruzgan, AFP reported.

Additional information will be released as appropriate, the statement added.

Officials said the Taliban unleashed a number of attacks elsewhere in the country in the past 24 hours ahead of a two-day meeting of Islamic scholars from around the world that began on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia.

Pompeo went on to say he's hopeful for peace going forward, but knows the four-decade conflict will not be solved overnight.

"A regional consensus Mr. Secretary is in the process of emerging".

Pompeo made an unannounced stop in Kabul on his way from Vietnam to Brussels to attend the NATO Summit later this week.

During a press conference with Pompeo and Gani, Pompeo said the Trump administration's strategy of sending more US troops into Afghanistan to push the Taliban toward negotiations is "indeed working". Efforts to impose a ceasefire in the region have been mostly unsuccessful.

Ghani has offered peace talks to the Taliban several times, and the militant group has so far rejected his requests.

In an unannounced visit to Afganistan, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo left a clear message to the Taliban: "They can not wait us out".

"The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is not a rebel or terrorist group".

The 119-page report underlines USA efforts to end its longest war with a combination of military and diplomatic efforts and recognises the key role that Pakistan can play in achieving this target. It was claimed by the Taliban.

"The United States and Afghanistan, and our allies and partners, must work tirelessly and together to end external support of the insurgency", it said.

Pompeo stated that part of President Trump's South Asian strategy was to remove "artificial timelines and arbitrary troop ceilings".

"Our South Asia strategy has sent a clear message to the Afghan peoples and its security services that we will support them as they continue to fight to defend their country and their people", Pompeo said at a joint news conference with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in Kabul.
