Russell Knox wins Irish Open after monstrous playoff putt

Grant SmithJul 12, 2018

Russell Knox is targeting a Ryder Cup debut after beating Ryan Fox in a play off to win the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in Ballyliffin.

South Africa's Erik van Rooyen began the day with a four-shot lead but struggled to a 74 to finish alongside Rahm on 12 under.

Earlier, the Scot had holed a 40-footer on the same green for a birdie that turned out to be good enough to tie Fox at 14 under par.

The Scotsman needed to hole his 40-foot birdie putt on Ballyliffin's 18th hole to get to 14 under and a chance of a playoff with New Zealand's Ryan Fox. The way I managed to do it, holing those two long putts, it was just my time.

New Zealander Fox put his approach into the 18th to ten feet but he missed his putt for the title, leaving the pair walking back to play the 18th again.

McIlroy will spend several days in London at the start of this week before stepping up his preparation for Carnoustie, where he made his Open debut as an 18-year-old and won the silver medal for leading amateur. Fox missed a much shorter birdie putt at the final hole.

Fox, who had a 68, secured a place in the British Open at Carnoustie, Scotland, later this month.

"I thought my chances had slipped on 17 to be honest, failing to make birdie", Knox said. Andy Sullivan and Zander Lombard took the other two places after finishing tied-sixth.

Van Rooyen had birdied the fourth to move to 15 under but his three bogeys in four holes from the sixth gave hope to the chasing pack. That's why I play golf.

Knox had finished second to McIlroy in the 2016 Irish Open at The K Club after the host produced two magnificent blows over the closing holes.

Kevin Na ended a near-seven year wait for his second PGA Tour victory thanks to a brilliant final round of 64 to win the Military tribute at The Greenbrier by five shots over 54-hole leader Kelly Kraft. While he was already exempt for The Open, Knox's win earned him a spot at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. But a top 12 finish at the US Open clearly did wonders for his confidence, and he built on that to post a runner-up finish that was his best in Europe since his breakthrough win in the Champions event in China in 2015.

"I'm happy", he said after the round.

'Golf is hard, ' he said. I feel like I nearly over-prepared for Shinnecock. But I hit some great shots, and the putter was just hot.
