Wimbledon Keeps a Stiff Upper Lip as Football Fever Grips England

Nichole VegaJul 12, 2018

The timing of the World Cup final on Sunday afternoon is causing consternation around the country as various sports, both professional and amateur, contemplate whether to reschedule their events.

Wimbledon is standing firm, however, on its decision not to change the start time of Sunday's men's final to avoid a conflict with the World Cup final, even if England makes it that far, Lewis reiterated.

Those who stuck around appeared more interested in following the action from Russian Federation via electronic devices instead of watching the tennis take place in front of them.

Lewis said he had not asked Fifa, football's world governing body, at any stage to consider moving the World Cup final to a different time.

There had been talk of the World Cup final being shown on the big screen on Henman Hill at Wimbledon, but that has been ruled out.

The rules of entry to the grounds of SW19 state that devices "must be switched off in and around the courts of play", but this appears to have been relaxed for this year only.

But Wimbledon chief executive Richard Lewis has refused to change the championship's stance and said attending spectators were expecting to see tennis.

England could play the final as they have reached the semi-finals.

'It is not unheard of for there to be a ripple of applause or a shout when something special happens in a football tournament, ' he said.

England go up against talented opponents in Croatia who stand as thriving dark horses in a very competitive World Cup in Russian Federation.

"I was out and about around the grounds and you could tell when England had scored.it was wonderful".

'What will happen next Sunday is Centre Court will be packed for the men's singles final and I'm sure people will be able to follow the World Cup final, ' Lewis told Independent.

"We didn't have one single complaint of anybody here feeling that the football interfered with their enjoyment of Wimbledon".

Said Lewis: "We want people to be able to enjoy in this modern era the fact that this is a tennis event but that there is something else very special going on".

"They'll hear every point: 'Wow, love-15, 15-30'". The players are going to look up in the crowd and not understand what's going on at Wimbledon.
