Indian record holder to cut world's longest fingernails after 66 years

Howard TerryJul 13, 2018

He stopped cutting his left-hand fingernails in 1952, after a teacher scolded him for roughhousing with a friend and accidentally breaking off the teacher's fingernail.

In November 2014, Chillal's fingernails were measured in Pune City, Maharashtra, to have a combined length of 29.8 feet, with his thumb being the longest at 77.9 inches, according to Guinness World Records. Or rather, a technician wearing a face mask and wielding a power tool carefully removed them during a "nail clipping ceremony" in NY.

A man with fingernails longer than a bus finally cut them off during a "nail clipping ceremony" in NY earlier this week after 66 years of growing them out.

He admitted there were also perks to having the world's longest nails that he will miss.

Shridhar Chillal, the 66-year-old Indian man with nails as long as a London bus, has finally had them chopped off.

When asked by Guinness World Records in 2015 how his nails affect his life, Shridhar said they were extremely fragile and he needed to take care when sleeping.

He only grew the nails on his left hand.

"Ripley's is privileged to display this truly unique and one-of-a-kind exhibit".

"Chillal dedicated his life to something truly remarkable and Ripley's is the flawless home to honor his legacy", a rep says, per the Hindu. He had made it to the the Guinness Book of World Records in 2016 for having the "Longest Fingernails on a Single Hand Ever". The museum will host a "nail clipping ceremony" today where Chillal's nails will be cut.

Despite Mr Chillal's fingernails causing him to lose function in his left hand due to their weight and length, and his fingers being permanently fused together, he went on work as a photographer for a government agricultural magazine for 22 years. He broke the teacher's nail and they got very upset about it, so Shridhar chose to take on the challenge of growing his own nails. Museum in Times Square.
