Wimbledon: Kerber reaches final as Ostapenko self-destructs

Serena Williams of the USA celebrates winning her semi final match against Germany's Julia Goerges.

'She's always going out there to win the matches, ' the German said.

Let others shrug at this latest accomplishment, as if all it signified were merely another chance at another in a long line of trophies.

Prowling the baseline, Williams was aggressive and precise with her groundstrokes, keeping Goerges pinned back and working hard just to remain in rallies.

Victory on Saturday will give her an eighth Wimbledon title and 24th Grand Slam crown, taking her level with Margaret Court's all-time mark.

Williams duly raced to victory, delighting the packed Centre Court crowd with a display that confirms the 36-year-old is nearing her best form at the flawless moment. I didn't think I would be doing this just 15 months after.

In comparison, there were just seven errors off the racket of Kerber and that tells the story of where the encounter was won. She is the second woman to accomplish this in the Open Era following Chris Evert, who played in a major final for 14 straight years between 1973 and 1986.

"For me, having to deal with PEs is more mentally challenging because if I have a pain in my leg, I automatically go to the worst-case scenario", she said.

Last year, Williams took a break from competitive sport, announcing her pregnancy shortly after claiming her 23rd Grand Slam at the 2017 Australian Open.

After giving birth to daughter Olympia last September, Williams was treated for blood clots.

"When I start this year, a goal was to be playing good in majors, in the Grand Slams, and to reach finals again".

"This is not inevitable for me".

"This is not inevitable for me, I had a really tough delivery and multiple surgeries and nearly didn't make it to be honest", said Williams after her semi-final victory on Thursday.

I couldn't even walk to my mailbox, so it's definitely not normal for me to be in a Wimbledon final. With the match at 2-2, Williams kicked off a streak of five consecutive games won.

Will Serena match Court's record?

It was the first time at these championships that the American had faced a player ranked in the top 50 and she stepped up with a powerful display that also showed better movement around the court than in previous rounds.

However, unforced errors were her downfall and particularly costly given Williams' unerring accuracy and solid service games.
