Antonio Conte: Chelsea sack Italian after two years in charge

Grant SmithJul 14, 2018

Conte won the Premier League in his first season and the FA Cup in May, but the team finished fifth in the league last season, missing out on Champions League qualification.

Chelsea had confirmed yesterday that Antonio Conte was relieved of his duties after two years in charge.

The Blues added the FA Cup to their trophy haul under Conte back in May following Chelsea FC's 1-0 win against Manchester United at Wembley courtesy of Eden Hazard's victor from the penalty spot.

'We wish Antonio every success in his future career'.

The question after Antonio Conte's departure from Chelsea on Friday was not 'where did it all go wrong?' but rather 'why did it take so long?'.

His intense training methods angered senior players and he alienated the board with disparaging treatment of Spanish striker Diego Costa and constant carping over the club's failure to replace top players with those of similar ability.

The club also recorded the second-highest points tally in a Premier League season. "Great man, Great manager".

Chelsea have endured a turbulent summer so far with managerial uncertainty meaning they've yet to make a major signing so Jorginho is expected to become the first new arrival at Stamford Bridge. The former Empoli manager was named Serie A Coach of the Year in 2016-17.

The main reason for the prolonged saga has been compensation.

Conte was reported to have left the club on Thursday, after two seasons at Stamford Bridge. Sarri and Higuain worked together at Napoli. This text will now form the basis of Chelsea's evidence against their former manager.

And Sarri's transfer wishlist is rounded out by CSKA Moscow's Aleksandr Golovin, whose stock has risen in recent weeks following a sterling World Cup, and young Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani.
