CDC Says ‘Do Not Eat This Cereal’ After Linking Honey Smacks, Salmonella

That's what the Centers for Disease Control advised bluntly in a tweet Thursday, noting that more than 100 people in 33 states have been infected with salmonella.

Kellogg in June recalled an estimated 1.3 million cases of its Honey Smacks cereal from more than 30 US states due to the potential for Salmonella contamination.

The FDA said on Thursday it would follow up with retailers to prevent the sale of the product.

Right now there are no other Kellogg products impacted by the recall.

Illnesses were first reported on March 3, and the most recent case was found on July 2.

The CDC puts salmonella illnesses at 1.2 million per year in the United States, 1 million of which are caused by food. "Retailers can not legally offer the cereal for sale and consumers should not purchase Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal", the FDA reported.

The agency is urging consumers to avoid Honey Smacks, a sugary puffed wheat cereal which has been the subject of a recall by the company since mid-June.

"Do not eat this cereal", the agency said. Florida has two people sick.

The CDC says that regardless of expiration date, the cereal should be thrown away or returned to a retailer for a refund. No deaths have been reported in this outbreak.

People infected with Salmonella may have symptoms including diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. They usually disappear after four to seven days. However, people in high-risk groups, which include children, older adults, pregnant women and anyone with a compromised immune system can develop serious complications which require hospitalization.
