PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi lose thousands of followers — Twitter's safety crackdown

On Wednesday, Twitter announced that they were performing a "purge", of sorts, which would get rid of frozen or suspicious accounts.

Removing locked accounts from follower counts won't impact Twitter's monthly or daily active user metrics, the company said on Wednesday. The accounts that Twitter was purging today were locked accounts that the company "detected sudden changes in account behaviour" and if the owners didn't validate their accounts, they were henceforth purged. The president now has 53.1 million followers, according to his account page.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump (@realDonaldTrump), possibly Twitter's most controversial major user, saw his follower count drop by about 300,000, from 53.4 million to 53.1 million, on Thursday.

"Though the most significant changes are happening in the next few days, follower counts may continue to change more regularly as part of our ongoing work to proactively identify and challenge problematic accounts", Gadde wrote.

Celebrities on Twitter have suffered a cull in millions of their followers after the social media giant performed a purge on dormant and locked accounts this week.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal too lost almost 32,000 followers (13.8 million). On 11 July, the follower count was 26.68 million and now the figure is 26.55 million.

"The people who are doing the clean up on Twitter should be given the task to deal with graft in Kenya, I think they will wipe it out completely", said one Twitter user.

Apparently, a lot of those accounts followed the CEO of Twitter. He also added that the new protections policy has helped Twitter to prevent more than 50,000 fake signups per day.

Union minister Smriti Irani, who has, of late, been lying low on Twitter, lost close to 40,000 followers (8.19 million) while minister without portfolio Arun Jaitley was down by over 50,000 followers (13 million).

"We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation".
