UK pound falls, UK politicians reel after Trump broadside

US President Donald Trump blasted British Prime Minister Theresa May, said her recently resigned foreign minister would make a great replacement and criticized the mayor of London as being "bad on terror", in comments published as he made his first trip to the UK Thursday.

A US-UK trade deal "will absolutely be possible", US President Donald Trump has said, after he told The Sun that Theresa May's Brexit plan could kill an agreement. "I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn't agree, she didn't listen to me", Trump said, noting that negotiations had gone on "too long".

Trump, despite his interview with The Sun, said that he supported whatever decision May comes to regarding Brexit, Britain's departure from the European Union.

Trump also took aim at London Mayor Sadiq Khan, saying he was doing a "bad job" on combating terrorism and crime in the city.

With its straw-blond hair, questionable face tan and unmistakably out-of-proportion hands, a blimp meant to depict President Donald Trump as a screaming baby flew outside the Parliament building in London Friday.

U.S. President Donald Trump flies into Britain on Thursday for talks with the leader of the United States' closest ally in Europe, and tea with Queen Elizabeth, set against a backdrop of protests and what he described as the country's turmoil over Brexit.

The US president's brash style and hardline "America First" policies have caused consternation across Britain's political spectrum and society.

"Our trade and investment relationship is unrivalled - we are the largest investors in each other's economies and every day a million British people go to work for U.S. companies in the United Kingdom and a million Americans go to work for United Kingdom companies in the U.S.", May said.

Trump: "I didn't criticise the prime minister". That will be up to her to say.

He said "the deal she is striking is a much different deal than the one the people voted on". "Right now we're going to be talking about some things taking place in the Middle East and elsewhere".

Earlier, activists floated a six-meter-high blimp outside parliament depicting the USA president as an orange, snarling nappy-wearing baby.

President Trump's complaints about "fake news" are often dishonest.

Trump has insisted the US-UK relationship is "the highest level of special".

"When we leave the European Union we will begin to chart a new course for Britain in the world and our global alliances will be stronger than ever", May said ahead of Trump's visit. He asked one of the reporters who was at the press conference to confirm he said "nice things" about May and that he wished they had put those in the headline of the story. "I think you're losing your culture".

"But Boris Johnson would, I think, be a great prime minister". "If the strategy at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was to shore up more spending in some ways, the president didn't want to take the win that he had because actually North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have been increasing spending on their own defense, which they haven't yet hit the deadline for in 2024".
