Family of Toronto shooter condemns his 'horrific actions'

Hugs and tears happening, too.

"Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?" he asked in an address to city councillors early on Monday. "They'll get through it, and they'll be Danforth Strong". "We wanted to do that to show our support to the community".

Since the shooting, Demircan said he attended the vigil at the scene on Wednesday night, and plans to do more.

Hussain's family issued a statement saying their son had a long history of psychosis and depression and had not responded to numerous treatment approaches, including therapy and medication.

Faisal Hussain is the name of the suspect in the Toronto mass shooting.

A police source told several media outlets that Hussain had been apprehended twice by police for mental health problems, but the interventions were when the 29-year-old was under age 18. Seems to have taken the edge off something which should not have the edge taken of it.

Quiet and reserved with strangers, Hussain was always mild-mannered and polite, recalled Khalid Malik, a friend of Hussain's father. "How's your job?' He said, 'You know, they cut my hours but it's alright, I'm going to start looking for something else".

Faisal, said the source, boasted to associates in the Thorncliffe Park Killers gang, that "he was a radicalized Muslim".

He said, "I think he wanted to impress those guys". "I'm not sure what else can be done".

A former head of special education also told The Star that Hussain often spoke about hearing voices in his head and that police were once called when he began cutting his face with the blade from a pencil sharpener.

Hussain had no prior criminal record and had not been on the radar of Canada's security agencies, he said. Photos of the young woman have been left at makeshift memorials along Danforth Avenue.

There are a lot of things unknown.

"At this stage, based on the state of the investigation, which is led by the Toronto police service, there is no connection between that individual and national security", Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said.

It was still not known how Hussain managed to obtain the firearm. Sources say Toronto Police, the OPP and the RCMP have all had an interest in the now-deceased shooter.

Certainly in this incident there are many more questions than there are answers.

Malik would often run into Hussain outside on his way to and from work, most recently at a local Shoppers Drug Mart.

Joe Warmington of The Toronto Sun reported that Hussain apparently had been spoken to by authorities about his online activities.

Hussain killed a 10-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman and wounded 13 other people, some seriously.

"Then I thought about all the people that I see here every day and all the kids in the park, at the camp, and I realized we had to come out today, and we had to eat a souvlaki for lunch, and had to be in the park, and look fear in the eye", Riordan said.

Whether Hussain was inspired or encouraged by someone, or if this is a case of mental health that had nothing to do with radical Islam, there is one fact that is mind boggling.
