50 years on, McDonald's and fast-food evolve around Big Mac

Calling all Big Mac lovers: the 50th anniversary of your favorite burger is nearly here, and McDonald's has big plans in store to help you celebrate the special occasion.

Beginning at lunch time on August 2, customers can pick up a MacCoin with each purchase of a Big Mac at 14,000 McDonald's locations.

One way you can get them is to by entering the #BigMac50 contest on Twitter @McDonaldsCanada, from August 2nd until August 8th and sharing why they love the Big Mac.

Big Mac fans from around the world will be able to receive MacCoins through a variety of giveaways, with each participating country celebrating the arrival of the MacCoin in its own unique way.

In the mad scramble to join the cryptocurrency market, McDonald's have entered the fray with the MacCoin. "Creating innovative guest experiences alongside much-loved menu classics is key".

McDonald's worldwide presence is so broad that the price of a Big Mac is sometimes used to compare currency values between countries.

Customers can redeem the new currency for a free Big Mac starting Friday and running throughout the rest of 2018.

According to USA Today, McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook revealed Thursday as the launch day to fall on what would have been the 100 birthday of Jim Delligatti, a McDonald's franchisee in western Pennsylvania who invented the Big Mac. The chain will be handing out limited edition "Mac Coins" on Thursday with the purchase of a Big Mac.

"This global connectivity of the Big Mac inspired the creation of the MacCoin".

14,000 McDonald's locations in the USA will be taking part in the proportional event.

Also of note is the seven different languages featured across the various designs, which represents numerous countries participating in the promotion: Arabic, English, Indonesian, Mandarin, Portuguese, French, and Spanish.

McDonalds says about 550 million Big Macs are sold annually, so in 50 years that's. um, well. a lot of Big Macs. Customers can now log online for free at approximately 11,500 participating Wi-Fi enabled McDonald's US restaurants.
