Man's limbs amputated after being licked by dog

Avid biker Greg Manteufel was forced to have the bottom of his legs amputated below the knee after capnocytophaga - a terrible bacteria - caused him to lose all blood circulation there through sepsis.

Manteufel contracted Capnocytophaga canimorsus, but there are other species of the bacteria that cause lesser side effects compared to what he had to go through. His wife, Dawn Manteufel, said he was perfectly healthy.

One 2014 study from Japan found the bacteria to be present in 69 percent of dogs and 54 percent of cats. And then his hands.

A 48-year-old is the latest victim of a flesh-eating bacteria that forced him to have all of his limbs amputated.

Doctor's told the outlet they believe the bacteria that infected Manteufel came from his dog, Ellie. "Within days of being admitted to the hospital while still fighting for his life, Greg first lost both feet, after a second surgery to remove more damage on legs, they amputated thru both Knee caps [sic]".

'It took a week and they were taking his legs.

Approximately 30% of people who do get infected die, which is why it's essential to see a doctor if you are bitten by an animal. He had just undergone a surgery to remove dead tissue and muscle from what is left of his lower extremities. "A$3 ll of the sudden, he's 48 years old and been around dogs all of his life. and this happens".

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website says many types of Capnocytophaga are found in the mouths of humans, dogs, and cats. "It took a week, and they were taking his legs", said Dawn Manteufel.

A case report published by the peer-reviewed medical journal BMJ recounted the story of an elderly woman who may have been licked by her household pet and later suffered sepsis and organ failure.

'That's all he kept saying to the doctors - "Take what you need but keep me alive".

The bacteria, called Capnocytophaga canimorsus, "just attacked him", Dawn said, and it did so quickly and aggressively. Over 99 percent of people who have dogs will never have this issue.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for Manteufel's prosthetic limbs and plastic surgery on his nose. As of Wednesday afternoon, the GoFundMe campaign had raised more than $US50,000 of its $US100,000 goal.
