Counterpoint: OnePlus 6 shipments beat Galaxy S9+ nearly 3:1 in India

"The importance of Huawei overtaking Apple this quarter can not be overstated", Canalys senior analyst Ben Stanton says in a release.

Huawei's impressive sales come at a time when a lot of premium phone makers are struggling, including Samsung, which reported a 22 per cent drop in sales for its mobile division in its most recent earnings report, revealing lacklustre interest in the Galaxy S9. It said Huawei shipped almost 4 million Honor-branded smartphones outside of China for the quarter, registering a 150 percent year-on-year increase. "It is the first time in seven years that Samsung and Apple have not held the top two positions".

China's leading smartphone brand, Huawei Technologies, outstripped Apple in global smartphone shipments in the second quarter this year, putting it in second place behind Samsung Electronics and signalling the rising popularity of its handsets around the world. However, it seems none of this affected the firm's business, as it has now surpassed Apple to become the second-largest smartphone seller in the world.

Meanwhile, Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, pointed out in a statement released with the numbers, by way of a reminder, that Apple has moved into the top spot during each of the last two holiday quarters following its product refresh. The company reached over 40 percent market share in the premium segment (Rs 30,000-plus) in the April-June quarter compared to 9 percent in the same period a year ago in 2017.

Samsung led the smartphone market by volume even though it registered an annual decline of 11% owing to weak sales of its flagship Galaxy S9 series smartphones.

But Huawei devices are available in the United Kingdom and we loved the company's latest flagship, the P20 Pro, when we reviewed it back in April. The number of smartphones shipped in 2017 fell 0.3 percent, according to IDC, the first decline after years of strong growth.

It's the first time in eight years that the U.S. tech giant has not been the number one or two smartphone company in terms of market share.

The Chinese brands are now trying to control the premium segment with Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi launching devices this year.

Preliminary findings by IDC indicated a total of 342 million smartphones were shipped during the second quarter in a 1.8% decline from the same period a year earlier.

Although Huawei now sits at second in the smartphone leaderboard, Samsung still stands at the top.
